The Alton Victorian Cricket Match started in 1983 and Ian was on the original organising committee.
Committee Chairman for many years, Ian then took on the role of Vice Chairman in 2007. He served on the committee until his last cricket day in June 2016.
Ian’s role involved all the cricket related stuff, the PA system, scorers, scorer’s tent, pitch inspection and marking, team captains and umpires meetings. He was the font of all knowledge.
He would arrive on match day with a large trailer containing various items of essential equipment – from bats, balls, stumps and bales, boundary rope and spikes, to a gazebo, tables and chairs, tools and a generator.
On match day, Ian worked very hard behind the scenes from 6.30am till the sun went down and if you needed him you could guarantee he would be sampling the ales in the Beer Tent just to make sure they were okay!
Sadly, Ian passed away on 16th April 2017 after an 11-month battle with a grade 4 Glioblastoma brain tumour. He will be sorely missed.
The beer tent will be dedicated to Ian so please visit the tent, buy a pint and raise your glass to a true gentleman.
